Digital Urban
Have a look at this blogspot that explores digital methods of representing cities. Written by Dr Andrew Hudson-Smith, the content relates to much of the work he is involved in with London's Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis. There are sections on mapping, 3d visualisation & timelapse visualisation, as well as tutorials and lots of useful information to get you started with alternative methods. The image above is part of a London 'Twitter' map and video created using google maps and other data.

Augmented Reality
New mapping technology developed by Microsoft and Bing maps introduced at a TED talk in February 2010. Interesting to see the detail that they can show, but more so how data from multiple sources is integrated into the one application, meaning that you get overlays of spatial information from different time periods, media and authors all integrated in one location.
See the talk here.
